OPEN YOUR MIND CASE 19 : Chanes

Detroit mainstay, DJ House Shoes is proud (an assumption based on the quality of work in question) to present the latest work from up-and-coming producer, Chanes. An Experiment in Instrumentation is a fifteen-track instrumental album that begs the question, how is it possible to create musical sounds by electronic means? The answer lies within Chanes’s practiced synthesis of electronic, hip-hop, trip-hop and ambient music to create something that is uniquely his own.

OPEN YOUR MIND CASE 18: Bobo Meets Rhettmatic

Bobo Meets Rhettmatic is a mixtape project that finds the familiar hip-hop faces of Eric Bobo, lead percussionist for contemporary marijuana enthusiasts Cypress Hill, and DJ Rhettmatic of the World Famous Beat Junkies doing what they do best. These two hip-hop mainstays are obviously in their natural element, imaginatively fusing Bobo’s renowned and well coveted percussionist talents with the honed skills of turntablist Rhettmatic. The result of this auditory union is pleasing, as it is able to capture hip-hop’s rudimentary stages. Unbeknownst to the casual listener this collaborative effort may appear as a forced pairing of talents, a spur of the moment project if you will; however, having performed together on several occasions this seems like a natural progression for this capable duo. Nevertheless, given their individual stock and the range of tracks covered one would expect better work. In my humble opinion Bobo Meets Rhettmatic drags and gets old quickly but it’s still worth checking out.

OPEN YOUR MIND CASE 17: Oddisee

With the fall season in a flux and man-fabricated weather being a common topic of discussion, it would seem like the only certainty we have when it comes to the seasons is that DMV’s Oddisee will continue to churn out heat… Rain...sleet, hail...snow man. Odd Autumn is a mostly instrumental project that further solidifies his diverse production range as Oddisee transports listeners into musical spheres that are not traditionally hip-hop, while still keeping us grounded with his patented soulful taste. Much like its predecessor, this project is not short of the get up get out and git something (productive) music especially for those dull autumn days when one lacks the proper motivation; take for example Tell The Truth, Every Day People or Almost A Year Since. The latter which begins with a mesh of sounds that will almost definitely conjure up images of mushrooms, dwarfs, and your favorite childhood video games before kicking into a sonically addictive hyperdrive that you wish would never end. Unlike Odd Summer, this project actually contains some rhyming from a rapper by the name of Tranquil, Oddisee’s “absolute favorite U.K. MC”; my preference has always been Roots Manuva…I’m jusayin’. Simply put, Oddisse’s music speaks for its Gotdamn self!
